Understanding Click Referrer

Learn what the referrer is and how it appears in your click reports.

What Is the Referrer in the Click Report?

The Referrer shows the website or source from which the user arrived before clicking your tracking link.

You can find this information in the Click Report, where it appears as a separate column called "Referrer." It helps you understand where your traffic is coming from and which sources are driving clicks.

When the Referrer Is Shown (or Not)

There are several common scenarios that affect whether the referrer is visible:

User clicked the link on a web page

If a user clicks your tracking link on a website (such as an affiliate’s landing page or blog), that website’s URL will appear as the referrer.

User opened the link directly

If a user copies the tracking link and pastes it into their browser, or clicks it from a document, email, or some messaging apps, the referrer may not be available.

In such cases, the referrer can appear as empty or may show the landing page itself depending on the browser behavior.

Browser settings or privacy tools blocked the referrer

Some browsers, privacy settings, or extensions block referrer data.

When this happens, the system cannot detect the original source, and the referrer will be empty.

Notes

  • Referrer data depends on browser behavior and user privacy settings

  • Not all traffic sources will provide referrer information

  • Missing referrer data does not affect tracking accuracy, only reporting visibility
